Gene D. Donley is a member of the Catholic Church and has helped his Mom with The American Cancer Society and March of Dimes. He is an Eagle Scout who earned all his badges working up the ladder through Cub and Boy Scouts and ex-asst den leader.

Featured book: Sammy: Hero At Age Five, written by M. Schmidt & Gene D. Donley.

Description:

“Kids can get hungry sometimes while on chemo,” says five-year-old Sammy, having a good day despite the malignant tumor invading his brain. Based on true events from the 1980s, Sammy’s story is imagined by his mother and brother as if the young boy might tell it himself. The result is gripping. Told in two parts, Sammy’s account first invites us into the everyday middle-American lives of a mom and her two boys. Sammy is a sweet, good-hearted kid, even as he faces the most difficult challenges in Part 2: “Cancer Arrived.” Here Sammy talks us through hospital trips and procedures, the hardest parts as well as moments of simple joy. It is not always possible to survive such a grim diagnosis, so Sammy and his family must embrace the smaller victories from one day to the next. Finally, our young hero is given one last opportunity to find his own unique path toward triumph. Listen closely as Sammy tells us all what matters most.

“..point of view of a five-year-old boy ..main focus ..is to relay the love he has for his family and how grateful he was to spend every minute he could with them.”
“This story was written in such a way that it really feels like there is a five-year-old boy telling it to you.”
“…will keep you captivated right along with Sammy as he unfolds his story about a horrific battle with cancer.”
“Sammy was a feisty little thing with a huge heart and desire to achieve his goals, and his relationship with Jesus was incredible for someone so little.”
“I highly recommend this book to families facing such trials. I know they would gather courage and inspiration along with an appreciation of life on earth and what awaits them in heaven with Jesus by reading Sammy’s story.”

Writing children’s stories isn’t as hard as you might think

Good Friday afternoon everyone, I have a special post for you today. I have embarked on writing a children’s chapter book.

The first time I wrote this story, it was just a little cute story that I thought about publishing anywhere, but when I posted it to the Electric Eclectic books program, the story was too short. I would like to take this time to thank Paul White, for not only editing it to make more readable, but for giving me the inspiration to write more and turn Maggie’s gravy train into a chapter book. Although I have more to write, I am loving the direction this book is taking.

When writing children’s stories, my first suggestion is to read children’s books, and hang out with kids in your family or in your neighborhood. Sometimes you can be at your most creative when writing a children’s book. You can create a story with characters that are out of the ordinary, but make the story for kids of all ages. Add a little magic, adventure, and. Mystery to your story, and you’ve got the perfect adventure for children and adults alike.

Have you ever heard of a gravy train with biscuits for wheels? Train staff made up of ferries, elves, a gingerbread conductor, and a chocolate chip cookie clad waiter? What about a gingerbread track? this is what childrens books are made of, and a whole lot more. As long as you make your story believeable, a children’s book is loads of fun to write!

Until next time, happy writing, and have fun with your creative storytelling.

Feeling Nestalgic

Have you ever had one of those days when you long to relive the happy memories of your childhood, or you long to find the music and books you love to read, so you can enjoy them all over again? This happened to me yesterday morning, while I was spending some precious time with my daughter.
Yesterday morning, My daughter wanted to watch the baby first channel, because she likes the colorful art, music, and watching the babies on television. I was listening to the music on this channel, and it reminded me of all the fun records I used to listen to as a child, such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Thumper’s Big Race, and so many others. I also remembered some of the children’s books I listened to on recoreds and cassette tapes that I received in the mail from my regional Library for the blind. Some of these books I also share with my daughter now, while I wish I could find others that I enjoyed to share with her. Do you have a favorite childhood memory you’d like to relive through the eyes of your own child, or any other children in your life? Please let me know if there is a favorite book or children’s song you enjoyed, so I can find it if I haven’t read or heard it, and share it with the kids in my life.
