#InspirationalJourneys Presents: Weekend Wrap up, Furious Fiction and Women in Publishing Summit Highlights

Hello, to everyone in the blogosphere. Today, I have a couple of things I want to talk about. I explain them in greater detail in my latest podcast episode.

First of all, I would like to celebrate my first entry submitted to the monthly furious fiction competition, which takes place the first weekend of each month. This contest is sponsored by the Australian Writers Center and stories can be no longer than 500 words. The contest if free, and you have a chance to win $500 each month that you participate. The writing prompt for March was as follows: Your story must have a character in disguise. Your story must be set in a park and it must contain a mirror. I wrote a story entitled Calm before the Fall, using the victim from A Journey of Faith: A Stepping Stones Mystery.

The second topic in today’s episode of #InspirationalJourneys is my highlights from the Women in Publishing Summit March 2-8, 2020. The nuggets I found from the various presentations are as follows. Each of these nuggets are explained in greater detail in the episode linked below.

Editing

Although an author writes one draft of a story, don’t expect your first draft to be ready to send to an editor. One of the editors said either she or one of her clients revised their manuscript seventeen times, before it was ready to publish. There are different types of editors: developmental/content editors, line editors, copy editors and proofreaders. Don’t rely on one editor to do all the various types of edits.

Self-publishing your book:

Self-published or Indie authors wear three hats: The author hat, when you write the book, the publisher’s hat, when you get your book formatted, edited and hire a cover designer, upload your book to the different platforms etc., and the marketer’s hat once your book is published.

What readers look for:

In a bookstore, a reader checks the cover, the blurb and the author’s writing style, among other things, to determine whether or not the book is worth the purchase. Readers also look for books that are in a series first, genre specific books second, and books by their favorite authors third. I also learned that poetry books are often published in series.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR JANINE MICK WILLS…

As far back as she can remember, Janine Mick Wills, a native of Columbus, Ohio, has loved the Lord and the written word. A former pastor’s wife, she now resides in South Carolina with her retired Air Force husband, where she heads the ladies’ ministry at her church and fills every spare minute writing for the glory of God. Janine considers a Child of the King to be her most important title, but she also enjoys being called a wife, a mom, and a mamaw to seven grandchildren.

Her featured book is entitled: Juanita and the Outlaw: Texas treasures, Book 2

Book description:

Juanita López loves God and her family and only wants to make them happy.
Sent to Boston to become a lady and find a suitable husband, Juanita López quickly tires of parties, fancy ball gowns, and dandies vying for her attention. When racial prejudice attacks from an unexpected source, she longs to return to Texas and her beloved home, the Triple P Ranch.

Pete Murphy is hiding from everyone, including God.
Pete, a cowboy with a facial scar and a wounded spirit, arrives at the Triple P, wanting nothing more than a fresh start. He accompanies his boss to Boston, where he meets the lovely Juanita López. At first, he can’t believe that she could find him anything but hideous, but eventually he accepts she can see beyond his physical scar and past sins.

But Pete’s former life catches up with him, putting Juanita in harm’s way and threatening to destroy their budding relationship. Can Pete save Juanita before it’s too late, and will their love survive this obstacle of their faith?

Excerpt:
“Do you think we could start over?” She held out her hand. “My name is Carmen Juanita López, but I am called Juanita. I am most delighted to meet you.”
Pete enveloped her hand in his large one. Juanita could feel the warmth of it through her glove.
“My name’s Peter Daniel Murphy, and it is I who am honored to meet you.”
“Peter? May I ask why you go by the name of Pete?”
His back straightened, as though her question had upset him. She was quick with her apology. “I am sorry. I can see that is a personal question. I will call you Pete if you like.”
“Juanita, where are you?” Reginald’s voice carried over the distance to where Pete and Juanita stood. “Are you out here?”
Juanita ducked into the grape arbor. “Oh, no. It is Reginald.”
“I thought you were to marry Mr. Davenport.”
“That was—” Juanita was about to say, until I met you, but caught the words before they escaped her lips. Pete Murphy probably thought her brazen enough already.
“You don’t want his company?” Pete asked.
“No. I do not.”
He grabbed her hand. “Then come with me.” He pulled her farther into the night and in the direction of the stables.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR Cynthia McGregor…

Multi-published author and freelance editor Cynthia MacGregor can claim over 100 books of hers that have been published since 1993, when her first book came out. And that total doesn’t include books she’s ghostwritten for clients. She writes for both adults and kids; and oddly, while her books for adults are almost entirely nonfiction, her books for kids are predominantly fiction. She works 7 days a week, with time off for church on Sundays, and puts in long hours every day. People who know her call her “the Energizer bunny.” She just keeps going and going. Cyn, as she likes to be called, loves her work and her life and says, “There’s no one in the world I’d want to trade lives with.”

Our featured book is entitled Wisdom from a Happy Woman – book 2

Book Description:

This motivational/inspirational book is a follow-on to Book 1 of the same title and is composed of short, thoughtful, uplifting passages—they’re not really essays; they’re shorter than that and not at all ponderous as an essay can often be.

Excerpt (optional):

WITHOUT DREAMS, WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE HAVE?

Dreams are the jet engines that help our hopes take flight. Dreams—it is not night dreams we are talking about here, but wishes and hopes—propel us into adventures and accomplishments we might not otherwise reach for. Without dreams, either we have no goals at all or puny ones at best.

Are you content to plod through life, drifting from day to day just getting by and seeing what tomorrow brings—which is probably “more of same”? Are you so devoid of wishes and dreams (or have you totally given up hope of seeing them come to fruition, to the extent that you’ve abandoned them), that you don’t try to improve your life in any aspect?

Even if you have a decent job, career, or profession, earn a steady income, and have no reason to worry about losing your position—even if you’re in a good relationship, whether or not you’re legally married, and you’re happy with the way things are…even if you live in a comfortable home, be it a rural farmhouse, suburban house or condo, urban apartment or loft—even if you have all these things, isn’t there something more you would like?

Dream it—and then reach for it.

Maybe you’d like to live on a houseboat. Maybe you’d like to travel to a far-off, exotic site—a rainforest, an Old-World city filled with ancient ruins, an Oriental location reasonably untouched by modern civilization, a mountaintop that only a brave and daring few have scaled. Maybe you’d like to see an invention of yours reach the marketplace and become the next hot sensation. Maybe you’d like to start a new charity or other organization that promotes a cause. Maybe you’d like to write the much-vaunted Great American Novel (although I think Mark Twain has already laid claim to that achievement—but maybe you’d like to write TGAN for this century). Or, if not The Great American Novel, then at least a best-seller.

But how will you accomplish any of these things if you don’t aspire to them?

It all starts with a dream.

– Rise of the Papilion trilogy: The Purple Morrow, Wolf’s Bane, Berserker

Book Descriptions:

Book 1: The Purple Morrow:
The Rovers were sent to decimate the Southernlands. Instead, they awoke its savior.

Ten years have passed since the Rover army tore through the Southernlands, leaving behind a trail of devastation and death. Most believed the attacks were random acts of brutality. The wise, however, knew the truth: the Rovers sought to destroy the one thing powerful enough to thwart their conquest. They were searching for the Papilion.

A new commander, bent on completing the mission left unfinished by his predecessors, leads the Rovers back into the Southernlands. Fierce and determined, he comes armed with a precious artifact and a secret purpose.

While the Southernlands reel under the new terror, the Purple Morrow, a harbinger of hope, appears to Jeru, an unsuspecting and solitary clan hunter. Finding himself enmeshed in a series of incredible events beyond his control, Jeru is compelled to take the first steps towards discovering his ultimate destiny.

Book 2: Wolf’s Bane:
The Purple Morrow is destroyed. However, its promise endures in the form of a champion, mankind’s only hope against the destruction spawned by an ancient, sinister evil.

The Rovers have invaded the Southernlands, sending its inhabitants fleeing for respite. Waylaid in a defunct desert town, and reeling from revelations about his past, a powerful, emerging evil lures Kelen to seek vengeance. Though he resists, Kelen soon learns that the Shadow Man will not relent until a terrible, ancient claim is fulfilled.

As Marathana quails under the burgeoning darkness, Jeru’s clan looks to him to lead. Jeru, however, knows his path lies elsewhere. Leaving everything behind, he braves the Badlands, a hellish desertland only the hardiest dare tread, to awaken the latent spirit of the Papilion within him. Jeru learns much in that place of desolation, including one truth which could turn destiny on its head. Now more than ever, Kelen, the Wolf of the North, threatens everything he holds dear. Jeru must choose: save the people he loves, or sacrifice them to save Marathana.

Book 3: Berserker:
“Love…can destroy, it can build, or it can do both at once…”

With the Papilion’s whereabouts unknown, the Shadow pursues its plan for Marathana’s destruction. In control of the Northern tribes and strengthened by allies in the Deep Southernlands, the Shadow prepares to unleash its ultimate weapon, the berserker.

Jeru’s sudden reappearance reveals the presence of a powerful, new will at work. Blessed by the Lightbearer and supported by a ragtag group of survivors and unexpected allies, Jeru prepares to lead the small army into enemy territory.

As war breaks, Kelen and Jeru clash one last time. One seeks to destroy, the other to save. The strongest will prevail, sealing Marathana’s ultimate fate.

Featured book: Two Reservations for Christmas (Luna Lake Cabins Stories Book 7)

Book description:
For centuries, Luna Lake and its surrounding natural beauty have been a source of comfort to those who have made their way to its shore. Now, Sean Adams and Liz Chambers have each returned to the cabins they knew as children, both seeking to escape painful memories from their pasts.
Three oranges, a puzzle, and a sharing of confidences result in a bond of friendship between the two, but Christmas isn’t about friendship or escape. It’s about love and all of its promise. Together, can they find their way to the paths forward they seek?
In her Luna Lake Cabins novel Two Reservations for Christmas, internationally beloved, From Women’s Pens author and publisher Annie Acorn once again weaves a warm-hearted tale of strength and survival, filled with the southern charm and Christmas spirit for which she is known.
Some stories are born classics, destined to be experienced over and over again. You don’t want to miss this one!

Excerpt:

A few minutes later, the owner of Luna Lake Cabins hit the Save icon on the Reservations page before him and let out a chuckle, as he admired the view across the kitchen presented by his wife, who was removing a sheet of homemade chocolate chip cookies from the oven.
“What?” She glanced his way, once she had set the hot tray on the stovetop.
“You know how I am about single reservations that are made one right after the other – one by a man and one by a woman.” He sent her a grin as he counted off on his fingers. “Two young people, both familiar with the area, one male, one female, male sounding a bit lost, female stating she has some serious thinking to do.”
“And from this you infer that these supposed strangers are both looking for love and are perfect for each other.” She crossed the room, pleased when he reached out and pulled her onto his lap.
“No, to this I add on the fact that both of them will be spending the next four days as the only guests at the Cabins and they’re bound to run into each other.” He bent his head and nuzzled her neck.
“Which, of course, means they will both experience immediate connections, one with the other.” She kept their banter going. “What an incurable romantic you are.”
“Maybe not immediate connections,” he admitted, before he dropped a light kiss just beneath her left ear. “But they obviously have at least some things in common, because they’re both coming here on what most folks would consider a family weekend.”
“True.” She straightened. “We’ll have more than enough. Do you think we should ask them to join us for Thanksgiving dinner?”
“Definitely not.” His face filled with a shocked look that belied the twinkle in his eyes. “The male sounds as if he could work his way quite easily through two of your delectable pies at a single sitting, and I’m not that willing to share. Besides, if I’m right and Fate has brought them both here at this time for a reason, then I think they’ll be better served by our leaving them to the lake’s magic.”
“It was good enough for us.” She met his gaze, her eyes filled with love.
“A sentiment with which I wholeheartedly agree.” He sent her a soft look before, this time, his lips found hers as he drew her closer and then proceeded to kiss her thoroughly.
