Original Poetry: My Poetry Season

The following poem is an expression of how difficult I find poetry writing to be during the winter months. When the weather warms up in the spring, you can find me taking a walk or sitting out on my porch, having a think and either coming up with new ideas for my novels, singing a song that fills my heart or writing a new poem to share with you.

My poetry comes alive

When I sit outside

In my distraction free zone.

When I must hide

Cooped up inside

Verses drift away one by one.

If you enjoyed the poem above, please subscribe to my newsletter for a chance to win a free copy of my poetry book entitled The Spirit of Creativity and receive a free short story. If you wish to purchase my poetry book, it’s available in eBook and Audiobook formats.

Get Your Writing Discovered in the PageTurner awards Writing contest

“It’s so much more than a simple award: it’s a community and a movement” — The grassroots writing award shaking up the literary landscape.

In 2017, author Paula Sheridan won The People’s Book Prize for her debut novel, The Grotto’s Secret. She was invited to a glamorous winners’ ceremony in London and handed her award by Sir Frederick Forsyth, a great recognition for the hard work and commitment that goes into writing a book.

But like most other writers, before this stroke of good luck, Paula had entered her work into numerous contests, and had found the process to be fruitless – closed and cold. Paula explains, “Most of the writing contests out there never share anything about the submissions, nor do they offer the chance to get published or find an agent — but these are things that aspiring authors and writers hope for the most.”

Frustrated with the soulless nature of the writing awards scene, Paula decided to take matters into her own hands; as writing awards offering agent representation, publishing opportunities, exposure, networking, author development — and most crucially, any kind of personal touch — didn’t exist, then she would create one herself. And thus, the Page Turner Awards was born, with one mission — to change as many writers’ lives as possible.

Paula set to work, assembling a judging panel of literati spanning agents, publishers, authors, audiobook producers, journalists and more. She also curated a collection of prizes that she would have found the most meaningful on her own writing journey — mentorships, audiobook production, eBook production, publishing contracts, PR opportunities and more. By February 2020, The Page Turner Awards was open for submissions.

Paula recalls, “When we first started, we were hoping to get at least one writer published and our fingers were crossed for getting one writer represented by a literary agent. But we weren’t expecting a huge intake in our first year”. Paula was shocked as the entries numbered around 400 by the time the submissions window closed in June — quite a feat for a contest just 4 months old. Her panel of judges were blown away by the quality of the submissions. Within weeks of the contest closing, three authors had been picked up by literary agents, even before the shortlists had been announced.

The online winners’ ceremony took place in October 2020 and was a huge success. On top of the authors who won agents, six writers won mentorships, five won a publishing contract and 19 won an audiobook production. Notably, the audiobook production prize was intended to be singular — but publisher Kelly Rinne was so impressed she offered the prize to 19 authors. “You sent over amazing writers. It was so difficult to actually trim it down”, she explains. “You’ve got a great group of folks here; you’ve got a great contest and we’re just thrilled to death”.

Paula was delighted to have such positive feedback from her judging panel, but stresses that the Page Turner Awards is a writer-centric awards, above all. So, what did the writers’ have to say about the contest? Writer Robert Barry notes that the Page Turner Awards “go above and beyond what’s normally expected [with] all kinds of support and opportunities”.

Such dedication and a hands-on approach is a rarity among the world of writing contests, so why does Paula give so much more than is expected? “That’s easy”, she explains, “nothing is more rewarding than helping an aspiring author to make their break in an industry that is notoriously hard to get into. That alone and the fact that we have changed so many lives means that every late night and early morning has been worth it”.

The Page Turner Awards are now open for 2021 submissions, and already receiving some great entries. The judging panel has more than doubled in size and includes Paul Michael Glaser of Starsky and Hutch fame. There are also new categories added such as a Young Writers Award, a Writing Mentorship Award and a Screenplay Award. It’s set to be even bigger and brighter than last year!

It is likely that the Page Turner Awards will go from strength to strength. After all, as Paula explains, “The Page Turner Awards is so much more than a simple award: it’s a community and a movement.”

Submissions are now open for the 2021 awards, and you can enter here: http://bit.ly/PTA-AWIblog Good luck!

MORE ABOUT GUEST NARRATORS Lillian Yves and Vincent Lee Grayson…

LEEANNE ROWE/ LILLIAN YVES  Originally from Oklahoma, and a graduate of AMDA in NYC, LeeAnne eventually made her way to SoCal. She likes to say she is from the East, West, and somewhere in the middle. She is a #1 best selling narrator on Amazon, an after school Drama teacher for the LAUSD and has been performing around California for over 15 years. She is a published author, co-writing novels under the name LeeAnne Hansen and a children’s book, All Things I can do under Lilly Rowe.

GRAYDON SCHLICHTER/VINCENT LEE GRAYSON  Graydon boldly declared at the age of five that he would “make Books on Tape” someday.  Five year old Graydon would be very pleased to see that grown up(ish) Graydon has made good on the vow.  Partnering with Lilly might be a bit more distressing to the lad since the younger version knew for a fact that “girls have cooties!” Still, a sacrifice worth making in the name of art! Although a stage actor and sound designer, for now those passions are on hold, all the better to focus on audiobooks.

The Spirit of Creativity: Inspirational Poems for the Creative at Heart

Written by Ann Harrison

Description:

Ann Harrison’s first book of poems delve into her creative journey, given to her by the Holy Spirit. The first section, entitled A Writers Life, covers her journey from writer to creative dreamer, until she blooms into a published author.

The second section, entitled Seaside Poems, will take you on a walk along the seashore, where the Holy Spirit and your muse awaits to fill your heart and mind with inspiration, pulling you out of your creative slump. Allow the Holy Spirit to help you fill page after page with words, pictures or fill your hands with whatever creative task you strive to undertake, as you read these verses, which come straight from the author’s heart.

The third and final section entitled Poems from the Heart, describes the journey of a lost soul as he gives his heart to Jesus and finds a new beginning. Others describe a narrator’s sorrowful tears melting into joyful music and singing. Some of these verses touch on the author’s spiritual walk with the Lord and the music God has placed within her soul. Open your heart and let your mind wander as the Holy Spirit speaks to you through each verse within these pages.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR S.A. Wilson…

S.A. Wilson is an author who writes Christian/religious fiction and fantasy, among other things. He’s a military veteran who’s currently married with a house full of kids.

S.A. Wilson’s book is entitled: The Carpenter: A Retelling of the Story of Joseph of Nazareth

Description:

Joseph, a master craftsman and carpenter, stokes the ire of his family when he weds his pregnant (and seemingly unfaithful) betrothed, Mary. Pious, devout, and guided by the dictates of Heaven, Joseph has no issue with taking Mary – who still claims to be a virgin – as his wife and committing himself to the protection of her child, whom he senses is extraordinary.
However, there are others who are also aware of how special the child is, and not all have its best interests at heart. Among these is the despot Herod, whose oppressive rule and wanton cruelty are legendary. Deeply troubled by a prophecy concerning a King to Come, the tyrant is committed to finding – and eliminating – this threat to his reign. (And, having already murdered members of his own family in order to maintain power, Herod has no qualms about killing a baby.) In addition, there are forces beyond the ken of men that also recognize the singular nature of Mary’s child, and which are determined to keep the salvation that the babe represents out of mankind’s reach.
All of these factions and more converge on Mary and Joseph as they trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem in hopes of starting a new life. On a journey fraught with peril, Joseph fights to protect Mary and her unborn child from danger on all sides, including the elements, bandits, and Herod’s legions – as well as an utterly evil and otherworldly demonic force determined to stamp out mankind’s only hope of redemption.
Armed with little more than his wits, his faith, and his carpenter’s hammer, Joseph must face impossible odds to ensure the safety and survival of not only his family, but mankind’s future….

Author Bio:

Susan Bourrie enjoys reading and writing poetry and stories whose main characters are humorous and heroic. She stopped taking the world seriously in elementary school when an aptitude test said she was supposed to grow up to be a poet or a forest ranger. Since people groaned at her rhyming verse and there were no forests where she lived, she became a mother, children’s librarian, and teacher of reading and writing for future teachers. She could not, however, stop rhyming and wrote and created Admiral Seasalt, Mortimer J. Readabook, light verse, and song lyrics when no one was looking. She writes for children of all ages including parents and grandparents who need hugs and hope.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR JANINE MICK WILLS…

As far back as she can remember, Janine Mick Wills, a native of Columbus, Ohio, has loved the Lord and the written word. A former pastor’s wife, she now resides in South Carolina with her retired Air Force husband, where she heads the ladies’ ministry at her church and fills every spare minute writing for the glory of God. Book description:

Pete Murphy is hiding from everyone, including God.
Pete, a cowboy with a facial scar and a wounded spirit, arrives at the Triple P, wanting nothing more than a fresh start. He accompanies his boss to Boston, where he meets the lovely Juanita López. Excerpt:
“Do you think we could start over?” She held out her hand. “My name is Carmen Juanita López, but I am called Juanita. I am most delighted to meet you.”
Pete enveloped her hand in his large one. Juanita could feel the warmth of it through her glove.
“My name’s Peter Daniel Murphy, and it is I who am honored to meet you.”
“Peter? May I ask why you go by the name of Pete?”
His back straightened, as though her question had upset him. She was quick with her apology. “I am sorry. I can see that is a personal question. I will call you Pete if you like.”
“Juanita, where are you?” Reginald’s voice carried over the distance to where Pete and Juanita stood. “Are you out here?”
Juanita ducked into the grape arbor. “Oh, no. It is Reginald.”
“I thought you were to marry Mr. Davenport.”
“That was—” Juanita was about to say, until I met you, but caught the words before they escaped her lips. Pete Murphy probably thought her brazen enough already.
“You don’t want his company?” Pete asked.
“No. I do not.”
He grabbed her hand. “Then come with me.” He pulled her farther into the night and in the direction of the stables.

Book Title: Origin of Shadow (A Light and Shadow Chronicles Novella)

Author: D.M. Cain

Publisher: Shadow City – A Next Chapter Imprint

Book Description

“Vincent Wilder.” The voice broke into his thoughts, everywhere and nowhere at once, deafening, yet somehow a whisper. “Are you ready to learn the truth?”

As heir to a notorious crime syndicate, sixteen-year-old Vincent Wilder is determined to live up to his father’s intimidating legacy, and expand his violent empire. The Wilders have terrorised the city of Pabell for decades and Vincent knows the business inside and out (and has dirtied his own hands more times than he dares to count.)
But no matter how ready he thinks he is, nothing could have prepared him for life at the helm. His father was a man of many things, but secrets wasn’t one of them, or so Vincent had thought. The deeper Vincent gets into his leadership role, the more terrifying and inexplicable skeletons he uncovers.
With the threat of a revolution, a mysterious and intrusive voice in his head, and a long-lost history he had known nothing about, is he really up to the challenge?

You’ve read the Children of Light’s origin story, now experience the same events from a different perspective with this prequel novella from The Light and Shadow Chronicles.

EXCERPT:

The ticking of the timepiece was far louder than it should have been. Every innocuous click of the hands reverberated around the room. Sixteen-year-old Vincent Wilder stood perfectly still, making sure his chin was raised and his expression stony. He tried to hide the fact that his fingers twitched nervously behind his back. This meeting needs to go off without a hitch. There’s so much resting on it. He made an effort to narrow his eyes and puff out his chest, hoping his young frame was imposing.
A single drop of sweat trickled down his forehead, running a sticky trail across his skin. He wanted to reach up and wipe it away, but didn’t dare draw attention to the fact he was perspiring. If they saw it, would they take it as a sign of weakness? So he did nothing and let the salty drop work its way down his forehead, running into his dark eyes. He blinked to clear the drop, but his vision blurred and his eyes itched. He could hold off no longer and was forced to swipe at his eyes with a hurried hand.
His eyesight cleared and he took the opportunity to glance down at the table and the people sat around it. A couple in their early forties sat on one side, close together, huddling for comfort. Their eyes were strong and defiant, the woman’s in particular. Her hands were flat on the tabletop, and she leaned forwards, speaking with determination.
The ashen-faced man beside her was silent. Despite the stony expression on his face, Vincent could see the man’s hands trembling.
Across from them sat Franco Wilder, Vincent’s father. Once, he had a thick shock of dark hair, long and wild, draped across his shoulders. That was how Vincent always pictured his father, but the figure that sat before him had changed drastically in the past few years. As soon as Franco’s hair had started thinning, he had shaved the lot, and the bald head made the most terrifying man Vincent had ever met even more intimidating.
Franco’s posture was rigid and unmoving, a coiled snake waiting to lunge. The dark eyes that had chastised Vincent since childhood were now zeroed in on the couple before him. His father’s fingers were locked together tightly, but Vincent knew that it would only take a split second for Franco to wrench the knife from his concealed thigh pouch. Vincent’s muscles too were primed, ready to propel him into a fight. Never relax around Franco Wilder. He’d learned that very young.
