Benefits of Starting a Home Business and Hacks for Making It a Success by guest contributor Lucy Reed

If you want to start your own company, think about making it a home-based model. There are many advantages to home businesses, like lower startup costs, no commercial rent, and no commute. Saving time by ditching the commute can also improve your work-life balance, giving you more time to spend with your family. If you’re convinced that a home-based business is right for you, read on—the below guide explains how to get started, step by step.

Start by putting together a comprehensive business plan

A business plan details what your business will offer and how it will be run. It starts with a company description detailing your products and services. It should also include market research, explaining how your business is unique from the competition. Other components of the business plan include a marketing and sales strategy, overview of your business financials, and a description of the organizational and management structure.

Designate a specific space as your home office

If you’re going to work from home, don’t just slump on the couch or set up your laptop at the kitchen table. It’s better to have a designated space where you’re removed from household distractions, like dishes and laundry. If you have an extra room, convert it into an office. Otherwise, set up a desk in a quiet area, like your bedroom. Follow best practices for setting up a comfortable home office, like investing in an ergonomic chair.

Select a business structure and register your company

Registering your business as a legal entity offers various perks, from simplifying tax filing to alleviating administrative hassle. IncFile has a guide to the types of company structures you can choose from, like a limited liability company, s-corporation, and corporation. Instead of hiring an expensive attorney to set up your company, do it yourself using an online formation service.  Note that state rules regarding business formation vary, so check your local laws.

Determine what licenses, permits, or insurance you need

Depending on the type of business you start, you may need additional licenses and permits. The U.S. Small Business Administration has a guide to various types of permits, from agricultural permits to permits for selling alcoholic beverages. There are also state and municipal permits or licenses you may need. Your local SBA chapter can provide guidance. Finally, business insurance can help protect you financially in case of legal issues.

Invest in marketing to promote your business

Once you have the practical steps taken care of, promote your business. There are many ways to do this. For example, Ann Writes Inspiration can help by writing website content and marketing materials like blogs. An attractive website is a great way to raise your profile. Make it eye-catching with infographics that boost brand awareness. Instead of hiring a graphic designer, use a free template and personalize it with your own colors, text, and other design elements. By creating infographics, you can make your webpage more attractive.

Follow best practices for staying healthy while working from home

Working from home has its benefits. However, it’s not all good. You may find that you struggle with feelings of isolation if you’re cooped up at home all day, for example, which can take a toll on your mental health. You may also lead a more sedentary lifestyle when you don’t have to go to the office. Check out these pointers for maintaining health and happiness while working from home, such as taking an actual lunch break.

A home-based business offers perks, from eliminating commuting to saving costs. You can improve your odds of success by following best practices, like registering your business as a legal entity and investing in marketing. Trust the tips above to get you off on the right foot.

Inspirational Journeys Presents: Believing in your Story when you don’t see the end result

Hello everyone in the blogosphere,

I have a special solo YouTube video and podcast episode to share with you today. The description is as follows:

This week’s solo episode is based on John Chapter 9. I’m reading from the KJV, but you can pause and follow along in your translation of choice. After reading this passage, I share the doubts and fears I delt with when I faced contention after sharing my story idea in a Facebook group. I share The lesson God taught me as he, with the help of the Writing Warriors for Jesus, brought me through my struggles and helped me to let go of my doubts and fears of the past year, to encourage writers to believe in their stories, even when they can’t see How God plans to use it during their writing process. Do you believe in your story, or do you have doubts? It’s okay to have doubts, but when you do, pray and ask God to replace those doubts with faith, trust, and joy. Let me know in the comments how I can pray for you as you move forward in your author journey.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR Victoria Zigler…

Victoria Zigler is a blind vegan poet and children’s author.  Born and raised in the shadow of the Black Mountains of Wales, UK, she moved away from Wales three times: once to spend six months living in Alberta, Canada, the other times to spend a few years living near Hastings on the South-East coast of England, UK, each time returning to Wales.  Now she lives in Wales again, along with a West Highland White Terrier named Lilie, a Cavapoo named Logan, a Hermann’s Tortoise named Artemis, and her Canadian husband, Kelly.

Tori’s featured book is entitled Jelena.

Description:

Humans have forgotten the old ways, and no longer respect nature as they once did, or ask before taking what they want.  They’ve forgotten about nature spirits, and the strength of the bond a dryad shares with their tree.

Distraught and in pain, Jelena can do nothing to save her bonded tree.  But she doesn’t have to share its fate; there’s a chance she can save herself.  Will Jelena find the inner strength to survive the experience, and bond with a new tree before it’s too late? Or will she follow her bonded tree to the place where spirits are reborn?

*NOTE: this story – while not overly violent or graphic in nature – is not your average cheerful holiday story, so may not be suitable for younger or more sensitive readers.

Excerpt:

Flitting from tree to tree, the desperate and distraught dryad fought against the pain, and followed, half-blinded by tears, as the family dragged the sled carrying her tree away, laughing and chattering excitedly as they went, discussing something called Christmas, and how wonderful their tree was.  The talk might have fascinated Jelena were it not for the fact her situation was so desperate, and her body was wracked with pain for the damage caused to the tree she was bonded with.

“It’s not your tree, it’s mine!” Jelena shouted, emerging in to the open.  But her voice was merely a whisper on the wind to the family, and they didn’t hear it.  She wondered if they’d listen even if they had heard her.  She doubted it; she’d known before she called out that they either couldn’t or wouldn’t hear her, but had needed to try.  Some might have heard her, even now, when people had forgotten the old ways.  But she knew even as she called after them these were likely not some of the humans who would hear her cries.  Still, she’d had to try.

After a while they reached the edge of the woods, and the dryad watched in dismay as the adults loaded the Frazer Fir and sled on to the roof of their car, the children still chattering excitedly as they did so, unaware of the pleas of the desperate dryad who had followed them through the trees.

“Please,” the dryad begged tearfully, moving closer than she really should have to the little family in the desperate hope they would finally see and hear her.  “That’s my tree.  We’re bonded, and need one another.”

Excerpt:

“Shimon the Rock, will you teach me to wrestle today?” Yoni shouts.

I groan and wonder who let Yoni in my room while I am trying to sleep. I worked hard in my father’s boat all night and brought in many fish and had a good morning meal and lay with my woman and slept long through the daylight until now.

Only I did not sleep well. I had that evil dream again, the one I can never remember. The one that leaves a darkness in the pit of my belly. And now Yoni has come to make a beg on me again.

“Shimon the Rock, will you teach me to wrestle today?”

I rub the sleep-sand from my eyes and scowl on Yoni. “Who let you in my room?”

“Your woman. I asked her fifty times if you were still sleeping, when all the other men are awake. On the fiftieth time, she said I should come see. You are not asleep, and you promised all winter you would teach me to wrestle when spring came, and the sun is warm, and it is the best day in the world for wrestling.”

Thinking on wrestling makes me sick in my stomach, for it makes a memory in me, how my brother Yehuda Stonefist taught me to wrestle when I was the age of Yoni. And now Yehuda lies dead in a pit in Samaria, and I still do not know how he died, and every night I dream on the matter, only the dream ends before I see how they killed my brother.

MORE ABOUT GUEST AUTHOR Rebecca Wenrich Wheeler…

Rebecca Wenrich Wheeler was raised in West Point, a small town in the Tidewater region of Virginia. From the moment she submitted her first short story to a young author’s contest in second grade, Rebecca knew she wanted to be a writer. Her love of writing led her to earn a BA in English and an MEd in English education. She spent several years as a high school teacher, during which she also developed a passion for mental health advocacy. Rebecca completed an MA in professional counseling and now works in the school-based mental health field and as a college adjunct psychology instructor. Rebecca also teaches yoga for the young and the young at heart, and she likes to infuse yoga and breathwork in her counseling practice wherever she can.

Rebecca’s debut novel is entitled Whispering Through Water

Description:

The coming-of-age story follows Gwyn Madison, the summer after her high school graduation, as she grapples with her fast-approaching future. She’ll have to face more than she bargained for with her Aunt Delia, the family matriarch, who holds the purse strings and the final word.  In the meantime, Gwyn stumbles upon a tightly held family secret. Could a mysterious letter provide Gwyn the leverage she desires? Will it only bring more family division? Or, maybe, the past was never meant to stay buried after all. Whispering Through Water navigates family dynamics, young love, and female autonomy with a little 1990s nostalgia.

Excerpt from Chapter 5 The Upstairs Room:

Uncle Beckett looked up from the counter, his brown eyes growing deeper. “Well, Gwynnie.” He rubbed his palm against the stair rail. “There’s more to Delia than appears on the surface. I know you two aren’t on the best of terms right now. I just wanted you to understand her a bit better before you left. Family fights, but family can reconcile too. Maybe, one day, the thing you have in common will bring you together.”

“You mean art.”

“Yes, at least that’s my hope.”

I smiled, without words to respond. Maybe the sadness that occasionally slipped into Aunt Delia’s eyes had something to do with the paintings. I hoped the price of becoming an adult wasn’t letting go of your passions for what the world deemed the more appropriate choice. Work, discipline, decorum, that’s all I knew my aunt to be. Maybe I was wrong, or maybe I only saw what she wanted me to see.

In the quiet of the moment, the gentle ticking of the clock amplified. Hanging above the bookcase of biographies, a silhouette of Shakespeare filled the center of the clockface. If I stared at old William long enough, his lips would rhythmically repeat tick tock. My uncle’s gaze followed mine to land on the clock.

“Gwynnie, aren’t you supposed to be at work in 10 minutes?”

“Oh,” I said, my eyes darting quickly from the clock to my uncle and back. “Love you. I’ll see you at home.”

I waved, slammed the door behind me, and ran the three blocks to the florist, clutching the glass ornament so it wouldn’t slip out of my hands.
