Sure, there are some authors out there who completely make a living off of their work. You know them all- Stephen King, JK Rowling, and numerous others. They are household names, even to those who don’t read.
But the reality of it is, most writers make little to no money on their work. They write because they have to. Writers have a story to tell, a story that consumes their thoughts and attention. A story that must be written for fear of it overtaking their reality. Most writers get rejected by literary agents and traditional publishers. They can get lost in the politics and droves of rejection letters. Some take control, choosing the self publishing route. However, they can still end up in the world of lost books because they cannot fund a large marketing campaign.
